Multilingual Menus: Reach Every Guest at Your Table
Automatic menu translation in 10 languages helps international and regional diners order with confidence — and stops mis-ordered dishes before they happen.
A guest who cannot read the menu does not order confidently — they order cautiously, stick to the safest option, or ask a waiter to translate every second line. In a busy service, that slows the table down and quietly caps the bill. A multilingual menu removes the friction: the same dishes, in the language the guest actually thinks in.
What guests get when the menu speaks their language
- Confident ordering. Spice levels, cooking style and portion names make sense, so guests order more variety.
- Fewer wrong dishes. “Paneer” vs “palak” misunderstandings disappear when the description is in Tamil or Bengali.
- Self-serve browsing. Guests explore the full menu instead of interrupting staff for translations.
Ten languages, one source of truth
Shopifire menus translate automatically into English plus nine Indian languages — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati and Punjabi. Guests switch with one tap from the language picker at the top of the menu; the browser does the rest. Your staff never maintains ten menus.
How to keep translations accurate
Translation quality follows the source. Write the English (or your primary language) entry first, and keep it honest: dish name, a one-line description, spice level, and key ingredients. Avoid idioms and restaurant in-jokes in the source — they do not survive translation. When a dish changes, edit the source entry once and let the translation sweep catch up, rather than patching individual languages.
Where multilingual menus pay off most
- Tourist areas, hotel dining and airport-adjacent venues.
- Metro cities where one neighbourhood speaks a different first language.
- Regional chains expanding across state lines.
- Cloud kitchens whose orders arrive from delivery-zone customers you never meet.
Getting started
Choose your languages during signup (you can change them later in Restaurant Settings), import your menu, and the translated versions build in the background.
